About:

The Korean Institute of Criminology [KIC] was established in 1989 in response to the increasing concerns about crime. Its goal has been the scientific analysis of criminal issues to assist in developing and formulating criminal justice policies in Korea.

The institute conducts research projects which cover from fundamental to complex and comprehensive issues. It is staffed by experts from such diverse areas as law, sociology, psychology, education, and psychiatry. The institute has made efforts to understand the current crime phenomena to suggest policy measures for prevention of crime and effective treatment of offenders.

Objectives:

  • Study criminal trends, causes, and countermeasures
  • Study criminal law and policy
  • Conduct joint studies on criminal justice policies with other Korean and foreign research institutes
  • Provide research grants experts and research organizations
  • Conduct research projects requested by the government as well as private organizations
  • Educate the public about criminal issues
  • Conduct research on crime, criminal law, and criminal policies in North Korea in preparation for reunification
  • Promote international exchange and cooperation for prevention of crime

The official publication of KIC is Korean Criminological Review.
