The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine is part of a dynamic department that encompasses a diversity of research and clinical interests. The department hosts an AIDS Prevention Research Center, one of only a handful of such centers nationwide and has received over 25 million dollars in research funding in this area. The Psychiatry Department collaborates with other specialties at the Medical Center in conducting functional MRI research regarding cocaine and other drugs of abuse. The Foley Center for the research of Older Adult Development provides another psychiatry department function. The department is an active participant in the American Organization of Occupational Psychiatry and co-sponsors the Milwaukee Cognitive Therapy Institute. The Wisconsin New Training Facility of the Chicago Institute of Psychoanalysis consists of full time and clinical departmental faculty members. Additional research focuses on clinical drug protocols and brain mapping. The MCW Psychiatry Department is currently the only non-Chicago member of the Chicago Research Consortium and one of the leaders in research funding. Finally, it is one of the leaders in academic managed care.

The Medical Informatics and Technology Applicatoins Consortium {MITAC] is a Commercial Space Center [CSC] of the United States National Aeronautics and Space Agency [NASA]. MITAC was established to develop, evaluate, and promote information and medical technologies for space flight and ground applications.

The basic premise of a CSC is to leverage technology through partnerships with industrial affiliates and other government agencies to benefit both human space flight and the commercial sector.
