Founded in 1847, the New York Academy of Medicine [NYAM] is a non-profit organization of physicians, scientists, and health professionals dedicated to improving the health of the general public and urban health in particular by sponsoring research, conducting symposia and educational programs and engaging in policy development and advocacy. Programs begin at the public school level and extend through continuing medical education. The Academy provides a place for individuals and institutions to convene, as well as a publically accessible comprehensive medical library of over 700,000 original medical and public health materials, including 49,000 volumes in the history of medicine, rare materials from 1700 BC to 1800 AD, medical Americana, classic works, 16-th Century medical incunabula, broadsides and manuscripts and a series of special exhibitions. |
