Schizophrenics Anonymous [SA] is a self-help support group for persons with schizophrenia or related disorders. It is organized and managed by persons with the illness.

Purposes are to:

  • Help restore dignity and sense of purpose for persons who are working for recovery from schizophrenia or related disorders
  • Offer fellowship, positive support, and companionship in order to achieve good mental health
  • Improve our own attitudes about our lives and our illness
  • Provide members with the latest information regarding schizophrenia
  • Encourage members to take positive steps towards recovery from the illness

Joanne Verbanic started the first US Schizophrenics Anonymous group in Michigan in 1985. There are now over seventy such groups spread across North and South America offering fellowship, support and information. Focus is on recovery, using a 6-step program. The groups have weekly meetings, guest speakers, phone networks, and often a newsletter.
