The Adolescent Family Life [AFL] program, administered by the Office of Adolescent Pregnancy Programs [OAPP] was enacted in 1981 to fund:

  • Care demonstration projects
  • Prevention demonstration projects
  • Joint prevention and care demonstration projects
  • Research projects

Approximately 262 care and prevention demonstration projects and 65 research projects have been supported by the program since its inception. Care demonstration projects serve pregnant adolescents, adolescent parents, their infants, male partners and their families.

AFL care projects are required to provide comprehensive health, education, and social services, either directly or through partnerships with other community agencies, and to evaluate new approaches for implementation of these services.

AFL care projects are based within a variety of settings such as universities, hospitals, schools, public health departments or community agencies. Many provide home visiting services and all have partnerships with diverse community agencies.
