Since its inception in 1986, the World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation [WAPR] has, as its goals, the promotion of national and international programmes and policies to meet the special needs of the mentally ill in the area of psychosocial rehabilitation and serve as a medium of exchange of information and experiences in this field. It has organised both conferences and national and regional workshops to meet these objectives. The primary aim of the WAPR is to provide to all stakeholders a forum for the ongoing discussion of the relevant issues concerning the long-term mental health care. The WAPR has official NGO consultative status with the United Nations, World Health Organisation [WHO] and the United Nations Economic and Social Council [UNESCO] and has been admitted to the International Labour Office [ILO] special list of NGOs. It also has relations with the European Commission and African Rehabilitation Institute and is a member of the Standing Committee of Presidents of lnternational NGOs concerned with mental health issues. |
